trace fossil geology
Would this be considered a fossil?

For my Geology lab assignment, I have to look on my university campus for a fossil of any age and take a picture.

I noticed that some places in the concrete sidewalk have impressions of leaves. So I guess this could be considered a trace fossil, right?

Not sure, but I can see where you're coming from though! Wiki definition: "Trace fossils may be impressions made on the substrate by an organism" so you could argue that the organism is man due to the fact that man poured the concrete.

Or:

I suppose you could also get information about the tree from the impression of the leaf the same way that we've learned about other plants and animals (dino footprints etc), but its not really in the spirit of trace fossils as you could learn more about the tree by looking at the tree it fell from.

As far as looking for trace fossil DON'T look in limestone, as I'm sure you're aware most of the stuff you'll be able to see will be actual fossils. Try looking in roofing slates for feeding tracks etc.

Hope this helps!
