Astraeospongia or Jellyfish Cast?
There is a store near my house that sells rocks, minerals and fossils. The owner is very knowledgeable about the fossils, but there is one fossil I'm not sure about. When I first saw the fossil, I thought it was definitely an astraeospongia, but the owner was sure it was a jellyfish cast. The fossil even had the star-shaped spicules. I looked up pictures of jellyfish casts online, but none of them looked remotely like the fossil I saw. Should I trust the word of the owner or my own instincts?
If you can see spicules i would be pretty sure that it is a sponge.
